KOROI GETS SPECIAL JOB AT INFORMATION MINISTRY
SUVA (Pacific Media Watch): Former Daily Post acting editor and Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase's cousin Mesake Koroi has taken up a special appointment in Fiji's Ministry of Information, the Daily Post reports.
But Minister for Information Joseva Vosanibola said yesterday Koroi's attachment had nothing to do with his relationship with Qarase.
Koroi started last Monday and is on a monthly contract with the ministry.
He is believed to be working with the ministry's special project team that visits rural areas to spread information about the Government's activities. Money for the project was allocated last year.
Vosanibola said contracting a local person was cheaper than hiring someone from overseas.
Koroi said that he was just starting and was still to be briefed on the areas that he would be covering.
The Director of Information, Eliki Bomani, said Koroi's appointment did not come under the Public Service Commission but under the jurisdiction of the Ministry for Information.
When questioned by the Fiji Times, Bomani denied Koroi would be paid F$30,000 a year, but refused to divulge the salary. He added that the post was not advertised "because it is not a post as such".
