BEATEN PHOTOGRAPHERS ASKED TO IDENTIFY POLICE INVOLVED

The Jakarta Post [online]
July 4, 2002

JAKARTA (JP): Four photographers beaten by police during a demonstration in Jakarta on Monday will be summoned by police to help identify the alleged attackers, a report said Thursday.

The police plan to show pictures to the photographers taken during the incident, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam said as quoted by El Shinta radio station.

He did not say when the photographers would be summoned.

Anton also said that sanctions would be imposed on any of the officers proven to have been involved in the attack.

The incident broke out when hundreds of students attempted to force their way past police into the House of Representatives complex.

The students were protesting the House's decision to reject a plan to set up a special committee to investigate a Rp 40 billion (US$ 4 million) Bulog scandal involving House Speaker Akbar Tandjung.

The four photographers, who were covering the clash, sustained injuries after being attacked by baton-wielding police officers.
